Author: Rick Riordan
EXPECTATIONS
As a self-proclaimed #1 fan of the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles and The Heroes of Olympus, I instantly knew The Senior Year Adventures would transport me right back into a world of non-stop adventure and heartfelt moments with my favorite trio. Rick Riordan does an excellent job satisfying my inner child whilst allowing me to continue on this wonderful journey into adulthood.
STORY
Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood return for one of the biggest challenges they’ve had to face: college admission into New Roman University. In order for Percy to obtain his three letters of recommendation from three different gods, he must undergo a quest for each one. This first quest requires the trio to search for and retrieve Ganymede’s (cupbearer of the gods) chalice prior to Zeus’s dramatic feast. The storyline does not feel generic or duplicated, and although our beloved characters and their dear comrades saved the world twice now, the author is proficient in making me feel as if the stakes are still high and failure is imminent.
Reading the story through Percy’s eyes was such a joy to experience again, elevating the story through his wit, humor, and heart. I loved the creative solutions the team conjured up to overcome these trials and tribulations, but the final confrontation was my absolute favorite. I believe that moment was relevant not only in the context of the story, but also in today’s society and its perception of youth and aging. This first installment to the series exceeded my already high expectations, and I trust that the sequels will be just as excellent.
CHARACTERS
Percy still is, if not more, witty, clever, and funny as ever. His heart seems to grow with each book, really solidifying him as one of my favorite protagonists. Annabeth remains one of the smartest characters I have come across, her sharp mind so brilliant against any and all opposition. Grover is still as passionate as ever in all he does, always coming in clutch when the group is in a bind and helping them remain grounded. Once again, we see that this team is truly all or nothing when it comes to friendships, love, and standing on business. Seeing old faces is always a nice throwback, and I am just as eager for the author to introduce us to new friends and foes in the upcoming releases.
